Importing a Katana into Victoria – What Collectors Need to Know

Many members ask about the correct process for importing a katana into Victoria, particularly when purchasing from online stores that ship from overseas. Because swords are regulated in both Victoria and at the Australian border, it’s important to understand how these rules work together before placing an order.

Below is a general overview to help collectors understand the process.

1. Katanas Are Classified as Prohibited Weapons in Victoria

Under the Control of Weapons Act 1990 (Victoria), a katana is generally classified as a prohibited weapon.

This means that possession is restricted and normally requires either:

  • A Chief Commissioner’s Approval, or

  • Coverage under a Governor in Council (GIC) Exemption Order

Members of recognised collectors organisations may rely on relevant exemption frameworks when possessing swords for legitimate collecting purposes.

Guild membership can therefore assist in demonstrating that a sword is held as part of a legitimate historical or collecting activity.

2. Importation Is Controlled Separately by Australian Border Force

While Victorian law governs possession, importation is regulated federally by the Australian Border Force (ABF) under the Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations.

This means the rules at the border are separate from Victorian ownership rules.

Even if you are legally able to possess a sword in Victoria, you may still need import permission before it can enter Australia.

3. Which Import Form Is Required?

Collectors often ask whether they need a B709B form.

In most cases:

  • B709B is typically used for controlled weapons or firearms-related imports.

  • Katanas generally fall under prohibited weapons, which usually require a B710 – Application for Permission to Import Schedule 13 Weapons.

This approval is normally obtained before the item is shipped.

If a sword arrives without the correct approval, it may be held or seized by customs.

4. Buying From Australian Websites

Some Australian domain websites (for example .com.au stores) ship swords directly from overseas warehouses.

Because of this, even though the website appears Australian, the item may still be treated as an international import.

Before purchasing, collectors should confirm:

  • Where the sword is being shipped from

  • Whether the seller has experience shipping to Australia

  • That the appropriate import permission is obtained first

5. The Role of Guild Membership

Guild membership may assist with:

  • Demonstrating legitimate collector status

  • Supporting lawful possession under Victorian exemptions

However, it is important to note that membership alone does not replace the need for import approval where one is required.

6. Important Note

The Sword Collectors Guild provides general guidance for collectors, but we are not able to assist with individual import applications or liaise with authorities on behalf of members.

Collectors should ensure they have the correct approvals in place before importing any prohibited weapon.

Final Advice for Collectors

Before ordering a katana from an overseas supplier, it is recommended that you:

  1. Confirm where the sword will be shipped from.

  2. Determine whether ABF import approval is required.

  3. Apply for the appropriate permit (typically B710) before shipment.

  4. Ensure you maintain valid collector membership and lawful storage once the item arrives in Victoria.

Taking these steps beforehand can help prevent delays, confiscation, or legal complications.
